An outdoor tile in Sydney has to handle direct summer sun, sudden downpours, and often salt air or pool chemicals. Three things decide whether it lasts: absorption, colour stability and slip resistance.
Choose a low-absorption tile
Water that soaks into a tile or its bedding is what causes efflorescence, staining and lifting. Porcelain absorbs almost nothing, which is why it dominates outdoor paving here.
Colour has to survive UV
Quality porcelain is colour-stable in sunlight. Many natural stones lighten or weather over the years — attractive if that is the look you want, frustrating if you expected it to stay the same.
Get the slip rating right
P4 for patios and paths, P5 around pools and on wet steps. Darker tiles also get hot underfoot in full sun, which matters around a pool where people walk barefoot.
Think about the build-up
Bonded tiles need a properly falling, waterproofed slab. On balconies and terraces where levels are fixed, 20mm pavers on pedestals are usually the cleaner solution.
