Tile slip ratings explained: P1 to P5
Slip ratings describe how much grip a tile surface offers when wet. The P scale runs from P1 (least slip resistant) to P5 (most). Every floor tile we supply lists its rating on the product page.
How the ratings are measured
The P classification comes from a wet pendulum test: a weighted pendulum is swung across a wetted tile surface and the friction is measured. The higher the number, the more grip the surface provides underfoot when wet.
What each rating suits
P1 and P2 are dry internal areas: bedrooms, living rooms, internal walls. P3 covers domestic bathrooms, laundries and covered entries. P4 suits external paths, alfresco areas, commercial circulation and internal wet areas. P5 is for surfaces that stay wet: pool surrounds, wet rooms, commercial kitchens, ramps.
Rating is not the whole story
Grout joints add grip, which is why mosaics work well in shower bases. Cleaning matters too: soap film and oil reduce grip on any tile, whatever the rating.
For a regulated project, confirm the requirement for each area with your builder, certifier or consultant against the current standard rather than relying on a rating alone.
